Green_Manelishi was my 'nom-de-network' while I was a computer science student during the early 1980s. Our college time-shared on a VAX 11/78x and when it was discovered that we could set the process name associated with our interactive user it was a fait accompli. A process name could be a maximum of 15 characters so I decided to use Green_Manelishi. The name is a mis-spelled version of Green Manalishi from the song (written by Peter Green) "The Green Manalishi (with the Two Pronged Crown)". I used the name simply for its curiosity factor and I used an underscore, i.e. _, rather than a space in order to facilitate "instant messaging" between myself and others. In 1998, when I purchased my first PC and went on-line it made sense to use that same name. It piqued curiousity in the "big 80s" and seems to do so many years later.
My wife and I have two grown sons and 5 grandchildren. Although my wife is a SSI certified SCUBA diver, her passions are writing, gardening and bird watching. I do not enjoy working in the dirt, or being outside in general unless I am diving or shooting but I do what I can to assist her. However, from our kitchen window I enjoy watching many of God's creations as they scurry, and fly, about in our back yard.
My temporal passions are diving and country and shooting . However, school (under and graduate) has kept me busy for the past few years and if I have to choose between diving and shooting ... diving wins. My eternal passion is my faith . During my life I've also been active in martial arts and rock climbing. I was not a particularly gifted rock climber and I now bear the scars of those adventures but I had fun. My martial arts experience also left me with a permanent reminder: crooked 'pinky' fingers from breaking them in sparring matches. Thankfully, I've not been injured while shooting but during various courses of training I have been voluntarily stun-gunned and pepper-sprayed; both for research purposes I assure you. My firearms, and related, training has been acquired through successfully completing various courses at locations such as LFI, SIGArms Academy and The Peregrine Corporation.I enjoy reading and usually have 2 or 3 books in progress. The reading list might best be described as eclectic but I prefer non-fiction to fiction. My tastes in music also range widely. From classical to metal, gospel to praise, pop to rock, there are songs that I greatly enjoy. As I type this I am listening to "The Black Freighter" by Steeleye Span. About the only music styles I cannot abide are rap/hiphop/disco and, except for Johnny Cash, country. For viewing pleasure I prefer stories to action: "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir", "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Captains Courageous" are among my favorite movies. However, as a guid Scotsman, my favorite movie is BraveHeart.
In 1983 I earned a "Certificate in (Computer) Programming" from Central New England College in Worcester, MA. Over the next eighteen years, and at a few colleges, I took courses in government, pyschology, business and computer science that were of personal interest and that were "core" enough that I was confident the credits would transfer. In May 2001 I enrolled full-time in the Excel program at the Portsmouth, NH campus of Daniel Webster College. Our final project, as a class, was a business plan including operational issues, financials and HR policies. We presented the plan to our instructors and assembled guests. For the duration of that project I served as President of our fictitious company. In May of 2003 I was awarded a BS in Organizational Management and in September of 2003 I entered the MBA program at DWC. I took a break starting May 2004 but resumed my studies in November 2005 and in December 2006, I completed the MBA requirements. During the "break time" I worked on developing some personal business interests. Visit the website of GM/RMS Enterprises, LLC for more information.
Although I have a degree in business, my daily responsibilties revolved around Systems Analysis and Design from a business perspective. I.e. my technical abilities, married to my business education allowed me to analyse the data processing itself, not simply the end result, and make intelligent recommendations about how the systems could be improved to maximize business efficiency. In addition to the S/B Analysis, I did a bit of programming, Project Management and "fire fighting". I was a "jack of many trades" and master of more than one. My primary programming experience is languages such as ForTran, COBOL, and BASIC on various VMS platforms although I have worked with DataGeneral and IBM systems, and built more than one PC. I've worked in several industries: healthcare, construction, point of sale, (trade) convention data services and the debt collections industry. I've managed small groups of IT personnel, built some networks, been a Systems Administration and have more than a bit of knowledge of computer operations.Regretably, in August of 2005 my position was eliminated and I began searching for a new position. Taking into account my experience with the company, I was puzzled as to why I was not offered the opportunity to transfer into a different department. Regardless, I am moving on. As mentioned in the education section I took a break from my MBA program to pursue some business interests. Those interests involve designing and marketing dive gear accessories as well as other items. Information on these products can be found at the GM/RMS Enterprises, LLC website.
